Identify the governing jurisdiction
The place of injury, residence of parties, type of defendant, contract terms, and other facts may affect which law and court apply. A state name alone may not answer the question.
Separate different clocks
A limitation period, government notice deadline, insurance notice term, appeal period, and court scheduling date are different kinds of deadlines. Satisfying one does not necessarily satisfy another.
Check rules that change the calculation
Accrual, discovery rules, age, capacity, defendant identity, repose periods, and prior filings may affect analysis. Exceptions are fact-specific and should not be assumed.
Use current primary sources
A lawyer should check the current statute, rules, and controlling decisions for the relevant jurisdiction. Public court and legislative sources are preferable to an undated summary.
