Record the road names, lane, crosswalk, signal, driveway, transit stop, lighting, weather, and each person’s direction of travel. Small location details can lead to different records and agencies.
Preserve physical and digital evidence
Keep the bicycle, helmet, clothing, lights, and damaged property. Save device or activity data in its original format when possible and photograph vehicle damage and sight lines.
Find independent records
Police materials, transit or business video, traffic-camera policies, vehicle data, and witness accounts may exist. Availability varies, and some sources are retained briefly.
Prepare legal questions
Ask whether a driver, owner, employer, property controller, or road authority requires review and whether a public-entity notice procedure could apply.
